In Memory: Maralyn Guthrie

All of us from the Peoria Diocesan Counccil of Catholic Women are saddened to hear of the passing of our Sister in Christ, Maralyn Guthrie.  Maralyn served in DCCW leadership for many years, and continued to attend events after her term.  In fact, she was present at last month's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.  The following text is from the area newspaper obituary.

Maralyn A. Guthrie of Annawan died Thursday, May 25 at the age of 91. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Annawan. Monsignor Dale Wellman will celebrate while Rev. S. Stephen Engelbrecht will preside. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in rural Annawan. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 30 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Vandemore Funeral Home in Atkinson where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.

Maralyn was born on September 8, 1925, the daughter of John and Helen (Hayes) Brennan, in Rochelle, IL. She graduated from Rochelle High School in 1942 and attended Northern Illinois University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in music. Maralyn married James Guthrie on June 14, 1952. She taught vocal music in Lombard, Wethersfield, Atkinson (for over 30 years), and finished her teaching career at Lyle School in Kewanee. Maralyn was a long time music director and church organist at Sacred Heart. She also was the President of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Province Director of National Council of Catholic Women, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at Sacred Heart, and member of the Annawan/Alba Women’s Club. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and accompanying many vocalists for weddings and funerals, playing bridge, golfing, swimming, attending her son’s auctions, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and watching all sports, especially her beloved Cubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen; sister, Emmie Hope; brother-in-law, Jack Hope; sister-in-law, Dorothy Brennan; and daughter-in-law, Carol Guthrie.

Her survivors include her daughter, Jeanne (Paul) Tsukuno of Wheaton; son, Mark Guthrie (Pattie Lewis) of Annawan; brothers Bill (Fran) Brennan of Maple Park, Jack Brennan of Libertyville; grandchildren, Ann (Reeve) Brandon of Chicago; Katie (Scottie) Welch of Chicago; Molly Carroll of Chicago; Kelly (Adam) Lang of Chicago; Sara (Marcus) Parent of Gurnee; Susan (Dave) Mercier of Chicago; Stephanie (Patrick) Boilini of Highland Park; and great grandchildren, Symone Parent; Sasha Parent; John Brandon; Riley Welch; Brody Welch; and Timothée Mercier.

Memorials may be left in her memory to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Annawan/Alba Fire Department.

For Immediate Release Arlington, VA March 4, 2017 — National Council of Catholic Women celebrates 97 Years  The National Council of Catholic Women, established by the U.S. Catholic Bishops, will celebrate its 97th year of serving the Church and communities since its founding March 4, 1920.  Historic milestones in the NCCW history include: a White House reception for delegates from the first NCCW Convention in 1921, address by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the 1954 Convention in Boston, Mother Teresa’s first trip to the United States to speak at the 1960 NCCW Convention in Las Vegas and NCCW’s presence at the historic signing of the Equal Pay for Equal Work Bill in 1963 with President John F. Kennedy.  Today, NCCW continues its long-standing tradition as Catholic leaders at the intersection of Church and society by providing resources that answer the most pressing issues facing society today— human trafficking, domestic violence, pornography, evangelization, and temporary care giving through the Respiteprogram. In response to the increase in numbers of women seeking to  enter religious orders, a Vocation Purse Club was established to provide financial aid to women seeking this vocation. “During our 97 years of existence, NCCW has promoted solutions to current societal concerns by developing programs or volunteering to serve those with needs,” said Sheila Hopkins, NCCW President.  The U.S. Catholic bishops created the National Council of Catholic Women to give women a unified voice, a program of service and a vehicle for collaboration. NCCW’s mission is to act through its members to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service. Hello Sisters in Christ!

We're looking for OUTSTANDING women who volunteer in parishes across the diocese!  On April 27, we will have a luncheon to celebrate their service to Christ and His Church!

The day will start with registration at the Spalding Pastoral Center at 9:15, with Rosary and Mass in the Cathedral at 10:00 and 10:30 respectively.
