NCCW Resolutions

NCCW members approved the following resolution at the 2021 National Convention:

Healing Racism

Purpose: At the 2022 NCCW annual convention, each Province will be able to name at least one action their councils have taken to begin reducing racism in their personal lives, in their councils and/or in their communities.

Whereas, Racism is a sinful, learned, negative behavior of prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism against others of a particular race or ethnicity (https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/racism),

Whereas, Racism disrespects human life and dignity and brings injustice and illness to our national and individual souls; and

Whereas, Racism can cause great emotional, mental, and spiritual harm to both the person expressing this belief and those experiencing the effects of this belief.

Resolved, That all NCCW members will pray and promote the NCCW Prayer to Love: Healing Racism (www.nccw.org —> Explore NCCW Prayer) to assist in eradicating racism and empowering council members, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, to become missionary disciples.

Resolved, That NCCW members educate ourselves and others by studying Open Wide Our Hearts, The Enduring Call to Love, a Pastoral Letter found on our website, www.nccw.org →NCCW News. The Letter, an accompanying study guide and other resources from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops can also be found at: https://www.usccb.org/resources/studyguide-open-hearts-2019-09_0.pdf and

Resolved, That we encourage all members to invite women of all races and ethnicities to join, become involved in our councils and to share equally in the benefits and responsibilities for the direction and development of our councils and our communities.

The Peoria Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is proud to partner with the National Council of Catholic Women in promoting programs, prayers, and ideals befitting to us as faithful Catholic Women.

In 2015, our own Peoria DCCW presented a resolution regarding prayer for the Persecuted Christians in the Middle East.  That resolution was accepted, and you can read more on our Prayers page.

Continuing in our commitment to NCCW, we submitted another resolution in 2017 related to our efforts to lead people back to the Church.  Here is the text for that and the other resolutions from the 2017 National Convention:

Return of Lapsed Catholics
Purpose: To encourage by prayer and action that lapsed Catholics come back to the practice of their faith especially invoking Jesus as “The Good Shepherd”.

Whereas, Almost every Catholic family has members and friends who no longer practice the Catholic faith; and

Whereas, The Gospel message of the Good Shepherd teaches us to strive to bring “lost sheep” back into the fold;

Resolved, That NCCW members and  affiliates request Masses for the intention of the return of lapsed Catholics throughout their arch/dioceses; that said Masses be publicized in arch/diocesan and parish bulletins; and that members attend said Masses whenever possible;

Resolved, That members will continue to evangelize by their example of living the joy of the Gospel and being active in the Church;

Resolved, That NCCW members and affiliates use the NCCW resource “We are Called to Witness” (www.nccw.org) and access additional resources at www.usccb.org

Cultural Diversity
Purpose: To celebrate the diverse gifts of the many cultures of the world as reflected in the women of the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW).

Whereas, NCCW is an organization for all Catholic women and aspires to become more culturally diverse;

Whereas, NCCW acts through its members to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service thereby upholding the dignity of all women; and

Whereas, Our Blessed Mother has appeared in all cultures in the unique manifestation of that way of life;

Resolved, That NCCW members will celebrate the diverse gifts that women of all cultures bring when participating in Council meetings and programs; and

Resolved, That the Spirituality Commission will offer resources on the NCCW website and in NCCW publications with information to help members develop an appreciation of the gifts of each Council member by incorporating a celebration of cultural diversity into the NCCW structure.

Submitted by: Beth Mahoney, Spirituality Commission Chair with Laura Dobson and Geri Kogurt

Mentoring
Purpose: To inform the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) members of the importance of mentoring at all levels of council.

Whereas, Mentoring is a trusting relationship bringing a mentor together with a mentee offering guidance, support, and encouragement to develop the skills of the mentee;

Whereas, Mentors are needed to challenge us to grow and mature in our lives and in our faith, by listening to words and also to the heart; and

Whereas, All rings of council can benefit from mentoring relationships, helping our organization to grow and thrive;

Resolved, That NCCW will encourage the utilization of a mentoring program at all levels of the organization which encourages the mentee to act outside her comfort zone while trying new tasks; and

Resolved, That NCCW will encourage all levels of council to utilize the mentoring program by publishing articles about mentoring in Catholic Woman magazine and Connect.

Submitted by: Lindamarie Richardson Kelly, NCCW Leadership Commission Chair and the Leadership Commission

RESPITE
Purpose: To increase awareness and use of the newly revised National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) RESPITE Program to refresh caregivers in mind and spirit within our parishes.

Whereas, The RESPITE Program was designed to support, assist and renew the family caregiver, by providing trained volunteers to serve as companions for a short period of time;

Whereas, A parish coordinator identifies the needs, coordinates and recruits volunteers for a RESPITE Program; and

Whereas, Volunteer training programs and personal liability insurance can be offered through NCCW using the new model of NCCW’s RESPITE Program;

Resolved, That each Province promote the RESPITE Program materials within their Arch/Diocesan Councils to offer relief and renewal to the family caregiver.

Submitted by: Chris Heiderscheidt, NCCW Service Commission Chair with Joyce Scott

Legislative Advocacy
Purpose: To provide information to the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) members on the vital role Legislative Advocacy plays in shaping lives and to create awareness of our obligation as Catholics to take an active part in advocating for and supporting the making of laws that protect the common good of all.

Whereas, The Catholic Church advocates for the compassion of Christ in countless ways, including healthcare institutions, schools, charitable works and social service agencies throughout the world; and

Whereas, The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) , through Catholic Social Teaching based on  our Popes’ encyclicals and Apostolic Exhortations, calls for renewed action that focuses on moral principles, the defense of life, the needs of the poor and vulnerable and the pursuit of the common good;

Resolved, That NCCW members become aware of pertinent legislative issues by signing up with their State Catholic conference, accessing the  USCCB  website and the sites of other Catholic agencies and organizations  concerned  with proposed and pending legislation; and

Resolved, That NCCW members study legislative issues, read and act on legislative alerts, becoming aware of actions taken by the USCCB that pertain to Catholic Church ethics and doctrine; and

Resolved, That NCCW members work with their local, state, and federal legislators through visits, letters, phone calls and emails to advocate for legislative processes and lawmaking that will positively impact the moral character of individuals in our society and protect human dignity.

United to Pray for our Country
Purpose: To promote uniting our country by praying daily for the safety of the United States and for a return to a godly nation.

Whereas, Our prayers are our most powerful weapon and there is a need to join together in prayer, united in the cause to heal our land; and

Whereas, Scripture teaches us to call upon God as found in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If thou my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven, and pardon their sin, and heal their land”.

Resolved, That the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) promote praying every day at a convenient time, the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the intentions of the safety of the United States, protection from evil actions and a return to a godly nation; and

Resolved, That NCCW makes available these intentions and prayers on its website, www.nccw.org
